As we head into the Memorial Day Weekend
- It's hard to think of summertime and not also of the American
pastime - baseball!
The class 'A' affiliate of the
Chicago Cubs makes their home in Daytona at the historical Jackie
Robinson Ballpark.A Daytona Cubs game is always a sure bet for a
night of family fun - Many games have extra promotions - This
Saturday's game (5/28/05) will be followed by
fireworks.
The ballpark's namesake, Jackie
Robinson played a spring training game here in 1946.In 1990, in
memory of the first site hosting a racially integrated game in
baseball history, the ballpark was renamed 'Jackie Robinson
Ballpark.'Baseball legends Stan 'The Man' Musial,
Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente have also been on Daytona's
diamond. Jackie Robinson Ballpark has been listed on the National
Register of Historic Places for its status in the civil rights
movement and efforts are under way to declare the site a National
Landmark.
The park has undergone many renovations
in the off-season to welcome back fans and the 2004 Florida State
League Champions.Perry's has teamed up with the Daytona Cubs by
becoming the 'Official Team Hotel'.Perry's hosts the
out-of-town teams along with their families and fans.We are very
excited to be chosen this year and we look forward to welcoming
each team to Daytona.
